Garbage Disposal Leaking From Bottom: How to Fix It

One of the common problems consumer encounter is garbage disposal leaking from bottom. Due to wear and tear, you could have this problem even if you have the best garbage disposal in the market.

The first step is to find out exactly where the garbage disposal leaks. With that information at hand, you can determine whether it can be fixed or get a garbage disposal replacement.

Step 1:
Let water run down the sink and turn on your home garbage disposal. Carefully examine to find out where the leakage is coming from.

Step 2:
The leakage can happen on a few places. Identify the source of your leakage with the list below and jump to the respective step to fix garbage disposal.

a.    Sink flange                                   -    Go to Step 3
b.    Dishwasher connection                -    Go to Step 4
c.    Discharge drainpipe                     -    Go to Step 5
d.    Bottom of garbage disposal unit   -    Go to Step 6

Step 3:
Leakage at the sink flange
Turn off power to the garbage disposal either by turning off the circuit breaker in the electrical service panel or unplug the power cord. Hold the disposer with both hands and turn it counter-clockwise to loosen and remove from the sink mounting flange.

If the three (3) mounting bolts is loosen, you can try tightening it and put back the unit. Check for any water leakage again. If water still runs down the side of the garbage disposal, then the leakage is from the plumbers putty between the sink flange and the bottom of the sink.

Remove the garbage disposal unit from the sink flange again and loosen the three (3) mounting bolts. Lift the sink flange slightly above the sink surface. Carefully apply plumbers putty on the area between the sink flange and the surface of the sink.

Next, tighten the mounting bolts and remove any excess plumbers putty oozing out the sink flange edge.  Fix back the unit and turn on the garbage disposal. Check for any water leakage.

Step 4:
Leakage at the dishwater connection
Tighten the clamp on the dishwasher hose used to connect from the garbage disposal to the dishwasher inlet. If the leakage is coming from the dishwater hose itself, replace it with a new one.

Step 5
Leakage at the discharge drainpipe
Firstly, inspect the bolts holding the discharge pipe to the garbage disposal for tightness. Tighten the bolts if necessary and test for any leakage. If the garbage disposal leak persists, you need to replace the gasket.

Next, remove the bolts and the drain pipe to install a new gasket. Fix back the bolts and drainpipe. Tighten it and test for leakage again.

Step 6
Leakage at the bottom of garbage disposal unit
For such cases, the water is likely to leak from the garbage disposal flywheel seal which has deteriorated and into the motor. In order to rectify this problem, you need to replace the flywheel seal.

Turn off power to the garbage disposal. Remove the unit from the discharge drainpipe and dishwater (if any) connection. Disassemble the disposal to remove the flywheel and replaced the old seal with a new one. After that, reinstall everything back and test for leakage.

If the leakage still occurs, you have to send the garbage disposal for repair or get a replacement. Do all these steps seem too complicated for you? If the answer is yes, it’s best to send the unit for repair or call the service personnel.
